There are three models that can explain the existence of the Prison Subculture, which I will now discuss so that readers have a better understanding of what will be discussed in this blog. Thus In this blog, we are going to discuss the three models that can describe the prison subculture.

These three models are:

  1.  The Deprivation Model
  2. The Importation Model
  3.  The Integration model

The Deprivation Model
According to the Deprivation Model of the Prison Subculture, the norms, beliefs, values, languages, roles, and traditions that comprise the prison subculture  are emerged in prison.
Prisoners create these rules and norms in order to cope with the agony of incarceration(Sirisutthidacha & Tititampruk, 2014).

Other phrases that are applicable for the deprivation model are as follows:

Prisonization is a type of socialization in which convicts learn to adapt to the prison society.
This involves learning about the rules, hierarchies, customs, and culture, as well as other components of prison life.

The Inmate Code is a loose set of regulations that represent prison society's principles.

Prison Jargon is a distinct vocabulary used by convicts.

In Jamaica, for example, inmates used the bird, which implies a sharp object that is used for stabbing.

The Importation Model
The Importation Model: This model embraces all components of the prison subculture, including norms, languages, roles, and traditions are imported or carried into the prison from outside the walls  by inmates. According to this perspective, the prison subculture is fundamentally the same value system that the convicts come from on the street(Sirisutthidacha & Tititampruk, 2014).

The Integrated Model
The Integrated Model: This model includes both of the previously stated models, namely the deprivation and importation models. According to the integrated model, the deprivation model is typically applied to offenders who have been incarceration but grew up in a nice environment and only committed the crime that led to their imprisonment. While the integrated model emphasizes that the importation model focuses on people who grew up in dysfunctional households, lived in disorderly communities, and mostly recommitted crimes as a way of life(Sirisutthidacha & Tititampruk, 2014).

The Integration Model takes into account elements like as family visits, institutional environments, and inmate coping methods. This model may be the greatest explanation for the formation of prisoner subcultures since it explains why different convicts react differently to inmate subcultures and the overall prison experience(Sirisutthidacha & Tititampruk, 2014).

  1. thank you for informing me on the models. I believe the deprivation model is the best as it allow prisoners to still make choices during their prison life. afterwards, they will be able to make good life choices being free.

  3. Models? i have never heard of that but this blog now tells me what it is. I thought that prison was like if someone does a crime they go to jail and sit in their cell and read a book or play cards with other inmates. and i learned that prison subculture is a form of adaptation to the prisoners. thank you for making me learn about models.
